Doing a Clean Install of Vista

The following are the basic steps for doing a clean install of Vista.

Overview: When possible, I prefer to install the Operating system and Programs on one partition and keep all the data on another.

The main reason is this is a much easier configuration to recover from when the operating system crashes.

1. Boot from your Vista DVD. You will initially see Windows is loading files... followed by a scrolling green bar at the bottom.
2. Select your  Language, Time and Currency, and Keyboard options then click on the Next button
3 Click on the Install now button
4 Enter in the Product ID.
5.  If you don't have a product ID and just want to install Vista to test, you do not need to enter one at this point. You will simply be shown another dialog box Do you want to enter your product id now?  If you don't have one, click on the No  button
6. Check the version of Vista you want to install.
7. Check I have selected the edition of Windows that I purchased and click on the Next button
8. Check to accept the license and click on the Next button
9.. If this is a clean install, or you want to partition the hard drive, select Custom
10. This will bring up the following screen where you can change the drive options
11. For example, you may want to delete any current partition(s), and create two new partitions, one for the OS and Programs the other for Data.
12. Click on Drive Options
13. Highlight and delete any current partitions.
14. To create a partition, click on New, enter the partition size, and click on the apply button. Generally something like 40-50 gigs for the primary partition for the operating system and programs should be plenty.
15. Now you will have one Primary Partition created for the operating system.
16. Click on the Next button and Vista will start copying files. Depending on the computer this can take 15 minutes or more.
17. After rebooting, you will be prompted to create your first user account.
18. Enter in the Name and Password. You can also select the picture that is associated with this account.
19. Type in the Name for the computer
20. Help Protect Windows - Typically I use the recommended settings
21 Set the time zone
22. Check the network option that best describes the computer
23. The last page is the Thank You. Remove the DVD and click on the Start button
