Remote Administration

This allows you to remotely access and administer another workstation.

You can administer the remote computer with the following programs:
System Policy Editor, Registry Editor, System Monitor and Net Watcher

Remote Administration must be installed on both the console and the client’s computers

Enabling User Level Security

1. Open the Control Panel
2. Double-click on the Network icon
3.. Select Access Control
4. Check User-level access control and type in the name of the NT Domain
5. Click OK – Ignore any messages regarding Windows being unable to find the security provider
6. If prompted for the Authenticator Type, select NT Domain
7. Restart the computer to enable User-level access control

Adding Remote Administrators

1. Open the Control Panel
2. Double-click on the Passwords icon
3. Select Remote Administration
4. Click on the Add button
5. Search for the login names of the administrators and click on the Add button.
6. When you are finished adding administrators, click on the OK button

Installing Remote Registry Services

1. The files necessary for Remote Registry Services are in the \Admin\Nettools\Remotereg directory on the CD.
You will also need access to your Windows95 source files.
2. Open the Control Panel
3. Double-click on the Network icon
4. Click on the Add button
5. Select Service
6. Click on the Add button
7. Select Microsoft
8. Select Microsoft Remote Registry
9. Click the Have Disk button
10. Type in either the network or local drive location for the RemoteReg Directory in step 1.
11. Now the designated administrators can use the System Policy and Registry Editor, System Monitor and Net Watcher to look at and administer a remote computer.
12. You can also have full access to any of the drives on the remote computer. They are hidden shares with the syntax of Drive$.
So to access the C Drive of a remote computer you would connect to \\Their_Computer\C$

 


 

Automatically Enabling Remote Administration During Installation

Make sure the following lines are referenced in the AddReg section of your MSBATCH.INF file:HKLM,Network\Logon,”UserProfiles”,1,1
HKLM,Security\Access\Admin\Remote,domain_name\admin_logon_id,1,ff,00
Make sure the following lines are referenced in the [Network] section of your MSBATCH.INF file:Security=Domain
PassThroughAgent=Domain Name
services=remotereg
Run INFINST from the \ADMIN\NETTOOLS\NETSETUP directory from the CD.Click on the Set path button and enter the UNC connection to the server where your MSBATCH.INF file is located.
Click on the Install INF button and browse to the \ADMIN\NETTOOLS\REMOTEREG directory. Click on the Regsrv.inf file. This will modify several INF files and copy the Remote Registry files so they are in place for downloading during installation.

 


 

To Use Remote Administration

Several special hidden shares are created on the remote computer.
C$ – Points to the root of the C$ drive
ADMIN$ – Points to the \WINDOWS directory
Any other hard drives are share with X$ where X is the drive letter.
Note: Only the designated administrators are allowed access to these shares.

System Policy Editor

1. Start POLEDIT.EXE
2. Select File / Connect
3.. Type in the remote computer’s name
4. You can now edit the remote computer’s system policy.

Regedit

1. Start REGEDIT.EXE
2. Select Registry / Connect Network Registry
3. Type in the remote computer’s name
4. You can now edit the remote computer’s registry

System Monitor

1. Start SYSMON.EXE
2. Select File / Connect
3. Type in the remote computer’s name
4. You can now monitor a large number of system resource on the remote computer

NetWatcher

1. Start NETWATCH.EXE
2. Select Administer / Select Server
3. Type in the remote computer’s name
4. To share a resource on the remote computer:

  1. Connect to the remote computer (see previous section)
  2. Select View / By Shared Folders
  3. Select Administer / Add Shared Folder
  4. Enter the Path you want to share in the dialog box
  5. Enter the Name of the share and it’s properties in the next box
5. File and/or Print Sharing needs to be enable on the client computer.
