WinChat

WinChat will allow you to communicate over the internet, real-time, at the same time. All for the cost of a local phone call

Determining Your IP Address

Since in a typical dial-up situation, you do not know your respective IP Addresses beforehand:
1. You need to find out what yours is, and
2. Give that information to the other person(s)
3. To find your IP address run WINIPCFG

Unless you have two phone lines, e-mail your respective IP Addresses and Computer Names to each other while you are on-line.

This requires a level of co-ordination since you each need to be waiting for the e-mail.

1. Add the IP address and the Name of the computer you want to connect to into your LMHOSTS file
2. The format for the LMHOSTS file is:
IP address followed by the Computer Name
3. For example:
   1.1.1.1 comp_name
4 A sample file, LMHOSTS.SAM, should be in the directory where you installed Windows95.

Determining Your Computer Name

1. Opening up the Network Icon in the Control Panel
2. Click on the Identification tab
3. Note the Computer name
or
1. Open up a DOS box
2. Type NET CONFIG
3. Note the Computer name

Computer name \\Comp_name
User name
Workgroup Workgroup
Workstation root directory C:\WINDOWS
