Updates
Normally, when you see the yellow icon in the system
tray that there are updates available from Microsoft, this only includes
critical updates. There may be many more software and hardware updates
you will not receive if you only chose this method. The following are
the basic instructions for getting a more thorough set of Windows
Updates for XP. |
1. | Click on the Start button |
2. | Select All Programs |
3. |
Select Windows (or Microsoft) Update |
4. | Click on the Custom button |
5. | It typically takes a few minutes to scan
you computer to see what updates are available |
6. | On the left side, In addition to the High
Priority updates, you will also see the option for Software and
Hardware Updates |
7. | You can click on Software, check the ones
you want to install, and they will be added to the list. |
8. | With Hardware updates, I am a bit cautious.
While they are extremely rare, I have had problems with things like
Video and Printer updates. So far I have not had any problems with
Network adapter or Monitor updates. |
9. | In the preceding example, since had done a
lot of updates recently, only two Software updates were available.
You can look at the previous screen and see that now it went from
Install Updates (8) to Install Updates (10) since adding
on the two Software updates. |
10. | Then click on Install updates |
11. | It will first download all the updates and
proceed to install them. |
12. | Depending on the type of updates being
done, you may be prompted to reboot the computer. |
